TOM LEA

Other works by TOM LEA

Publication: Little, Brown and Company, 1964, Boston

First edition. Gilt and blind stamped leather, marbled end-papers, top edges gilt, t.e.g. by Harcourt Bindery. Illustrated by the author. One of only 100 numbered copies, specifically printed on mouldmade arches paper, and signed by the author. This is copy no. 100 and is accompanied by a signed and dated print by Lea of his character, Young Lope. As new, unread copy in publisher's cloth slipcase. This copy is additionally inscribed by Lea: "Tom Lea, at El Paso de Norte, Day of San Miguel, Anno di 1964." This exceptionally handsome book (possibly the best job of bookmaking by an American trade publisher since the second world war) is certainly one of the handful of most sought after of all modern southwestern books. It was vastly over-subscribed on publication, and the publishers were forced to distribute copies via lottery to those individuals who had ordered, thereby incurring the wrath of any number of customers and dealers. Since the time of publication, this limited issue simply has not been available. To quote Reese in their catalog 19: "We know of one copy sold last year (The C.W. Josey copy), and a copy catalogued by a major southwestern dealer several years ago at a price in excess of $3M., but we are unable to trace any other publicly offered copies." This is a cornerstone work for any collection of southwestern literature or art, and to quote one of the most deified commentators on the Texas and Southwestern book scene, "This lean-phrased story of the early Spaniards and their all-important horses is the best example to date of Tom's diverse talents. Written, illustrated and designed by one man, this book is the full expression of his artistry." As new, unread copy in the original cloth slipcase with paper label on the spine and titles stamped in maroon.
