A travel narrative recounting Parker’s journey from New England to the western United States, including his observations of Texas. Parker, a well-educated New Englander, describes landscapes, people, and early settlements he encountered during his travels. His account offers a glimpse into the conditions and prospects of the frontier during the early 1830’s, highlighting the challenges of westward expansion, the economic potential of Texas, and the diverse cultures and environments that settlers encountered. The work also reflects Parker’s perspective on the social and political developments of the time, particularly in relation to the allure of Texas for American settlers. Through his detailed observations, Parker provides readers with a firsthand view of the West during a period of growing interest and migration to the region. Raines says "One of the earliest descriptions of Texas in English, by an observing and friendly traveler."
