Publication: Brule Index, 1894, Kimball, South Dakota

First Edition. Printed Wrappers. 139pp. Two pages of portraits. A very rare, first-hand account of the Indian Campaigns on the Upper Missouri in 1863 -1865. Drips was a member of the Sixth Iowa Cavalry. "The author participated in the Indian campaigns of 1863-5 under General Sully on the Upper Missouri, in North and South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming and Idaho. He was painstakingly precise in his description of various events, having kept a day-to-day journal. His descriptions of Indian battles include those at Fort Rice, Devil's Lake, Knife River, White Stone Hill, the Yellowstone campaign, etc."-Peter Decker. "The narrative was written contemporaneously with the events and, as Drips says, printed just as it was written."-Eberstadt 135:294. "Very Rare."-Holiday 317. Some professional restoration to a few small areas on the fore-edge of front wrapper and a couple of pages. Some very small chips to fore-edge of a few early pages. Otherwise an exceptionally nice copy of a fragile, Plains wars rarity. Protected in ornate 4-point slipcase with a leather spine, raised-bands, and title in gilt, and decorative paper boards.
