Amatuer sleuth/playwright Maltravers is asked by a friend, who fears his stepdaughter is somehow involved in the vicious murder of a visiting poet, to investigate. The poet was murdered in the small village's churchyard. This was followed by a disturbing sequence of events connected to the legendary Lazarus tree in the same churchyard. The task of getting to the truth is made harder by the hostility of the villagers, hostility which intensifies as Maltravers uncovers secrets best left hidden.
