First edition. 7 1/4" x 4 1/2" in dusty coral wrappers with editor's portrait on front wrapper. Rear wrapper offers "Old Kentucky Home." 20 pp. Illustrations. Dedication to "The Patrons of Tobacco." Inside rear wrapper is an advertisement for "Burr Oak" chewing tobacco. Predominantly advertisements in the form of humorous stories or anecdotes for the "Burr Oak" brand of chewing tobacco manufactured by the Harry Weissinger Tobacco Company. The contents include The Judge's Weakness (A thrilling court scene that took place in a Kentucky village - how a Negro touched the hearts of judge and jury and secured his acquittal ... written in Negro dialect); Sketch of the Harry Weissinger Tobacco Company; Justice Harlan and His Tobacco; Colonel Cowhorn, of Texas; Borrowing Trouble ("Don's take your hat off to the devil before he appears."); Steve Quits Chewing (written in Negro dialect); Speech (extract from speech delivered by Harry Weissinger, at the Louisville Exposition, September 18, 1885); A Tramp and His Love for Good Tobacco (a story about Mr. Jones who found a stray cow. Shortly afterward a negro arrived claiming that the cow was his. Jones told the negro to prove that he was the owner.
