Publication: Junior Literary Guild / Charles Scribner's Sons, 1931, New York

First edition thus. 8vo. Maroon cloth, titles stamped in gilt on the front cover and spine, [10], 342 pp., frontispiece, illustrated by the author. Don Frazier in his descriptive bibliography of the Will James Books says on page 48: "Sun Up is the first of Will James' books to reuse stories that were already used in previous books. Of the 16 stories 9 are reprinted from previous Will James books: three from Cowboys North and South, three from Drifting Cowboy, and three from Cow Country." This copy of Sun Up is the Junior Literary Guild book edition and is in the rare dust jacket as Frazier says on page 50: "This second-state first edition dust jacket is a rare bird and I've only seen about three or four of them in all my years." From the front flap fold of the rare dust jacket we find the words: "This book has been chosen by the Editors of the JUNIOR LITERARY GUILD, The Boys' and Girls' Own Book Club as the selection for June, 1931 sent to Older Boys." Non-authorial inked gift inscription dated "Sept 22nd, 1931" on front free fly leaf, else a fine, tight, square copy in the rare, lightly soiled dust jacket with a small bit of restoration to the head of spine by a master paper conservator. Housed in a cloth clamshell case with a matching front cover of the book repeated on the front cover, and with a paper spine label and titles in black. An exceptional copy.
