This was a special 16-page 11 1/8" X 16" supplement published in New York for the week ending September 27, 1890, Vol. LXXI, No. 1828.It served as a supplement to An Empire Illustrated, a special promotional issue designed to encourage real estate and capital investments in Texas.

In May 1890, a group of prominent journalists, editors, and publishers traveled on a two-month inspection tour of Texas. The party traveled aboard a private palace car named the Mayflower, which departed from Chicago over the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad and was illustrated on the cover of the edition's tour coverage. Prominent members of the traveling party included Russell B. Harrison ,part proprietor of the newspaper, Truman G. Palmer, manager of the western department, editor John A. Sleicher, and artist George E. Burr. The core article inside the supplement was titled "The Lone Star State." It praised Texas as the most prosperous and promising state in the Union, aiming to attract investment capital from New York, New England, and the American West. It also featured extensive engravings and views of growing urban hubs like Dallas and San Antonio.
