Camp Ford, near Tyler, was the largest prisoner of war camp in Texas, holding both Union army and navy prisoners. The authors chronicle its history from establishment as a prison in July 1863, to its destruction on July 1865 by elements of the 10th Illinois Cavalry. There are chapters devoted to early history, living conditions, morale, escapes, punishments, and its eventual demise. The book shows significant scholarly research using primary sources among the most important being the military Letters and Orders Book which was the original ledger for correspondence relevant to the military headquarters in Tyler from 1862 to 1865. The best work to date on the subject. Fine in transparent dust jacket.
