An historical Western novel, set in the American frontier during the 1870s, it combines fictional adventure with real historical figures, places, photographs, and illustrations to recreate life in the era of westward expansion and the Indian Wars. The story follows a young, inexperienced Easterner ... a "tenderfoot" ... who leaves the settled East to seek adventure and opportunity on the western frontier. Traveling through Colorado and the Great Plains, he encounters ranchers, buffalo hunters, scouts, cavalry officers, settlers, and Native Americans, gradually learning the skills and values needed to survive in the rugged West. The novel traces events from the economic turmoil following the Panic of 1873 to frontier life in Colorado and New Mexico, eventually taking the hero north into the Dakota Territory, where he joins scouting expeditions associated with George Armstrong Custer. These episodes culminate in a fictionalized account of the campaign that led to Custer's defeat, after which the story returns to the peaceful setting of a ranch along the Cache la Poudre River.
