First Edition. Rebound in Three-Quarter Leather, with Marbled Boards and matching Marbled Endpapers. viii, 144pp. + 4pp. of advertisements, Frontispiece, Preface, Illustrated, Map, Footnotes. Howes H 754 says, "Doniphan's and Kearney's conquests gave the United States its claim to New Mexico and Arizona, finally acquired by the Gadsden Purchase." Cowan p.115 says, "The account of the operations of Gen. Kearney and others in California is concise and one of the best of the period." "A classic work on the expedition along the SFT during the Mexican War. The units left Fort Leavenworth in late June 1846 and reached Santa Fe on August 18, 1846 (pp. 21-78). They went via Bent's Fort and Raton Pass." Doniphan's troops, with Hughes as an officer, marched southwest into Chihuahua, while Kearney trekked overland to California. Ex-Library copy, with stamp in upper fore-corner of title page and on both endpapers, and small perforation imprint on title page for La Crosse Public Library. Scar on rear endpapers, likely from removal of library pocket. Minor cracking to external, lower fore-edge of spine. Rubbing to corners and edges. Some sunning to leather on edge of back panel and a 1" circular scar on upper corner of front panel. In all, a very good copy of a classic of the Southwest.
