Walter Durbin was a cowboy for the Waggoner Ranch and Tee Fork Cattle Company before becoming a Ranger. Adams 150: 131 says: "This is a story of one of Texas' peace officers and his adventurous life, revealing some history heretofore untold. The author tells of some new adventures of Bass Outlaw not seen before, has a mention of Sam Bass, Jim Courtright, John Selman and many of the noted Texas Rangers. The author had a great deal of trouble with errors by the publisher, such as no table of contents, no illustrated end sheets, the first page of the bibliography missing, and on page 109 several lines out of place. Also on page 112, line 31 the word "be" is omitted. When the author caught these mistakes in the page proofs he called this to the attention of the publisher after only eight copies were complete. He asked for these copies and had them bound himself to hold as collector's items. He gave me an autographed copy expressing his thanks for my writing an introduction for the book and his appreciation of my helping him with the editing. This book is valuable for its history not commonly known."--Ramon F. Adams. This is one of those eight copies! Signed, handwritten statement by the author on the upper portion of the half-title says:"This is one of eight copies of the first state of the first edition of this book. Some of the errors were corrected later.-Robert W. Stephens. A fine copy of the first state of the first edition, protected in a custom slipcase.
