The Bascom affair and the origins of the Apache wars. When a 12 year old boy was taken by Apaches, his father enlisted the aid of Lt. George Bascom who organized a patrol and met with Cochise not advising him before the fact that he was suspected as the leader of the group that kidnapped the boy. Cochise arrived for the meeting with Bascom and brought along his wife and other family members who were taken hostage and held until the kidnapped boy was returned. Cochise fled the meeting tent amid a shower of bullets and vowed revenge. What followed that precipitous encounter would ignite a Southwestern frontier war between the Chiricahuas and the U. S. Army that would last twenty-five years. As new, unread copy in dust jacket.
