Publication: Little, Brown and Company, 1944, Boston

First edition. One of 125 copies signed by the editor for presentation to friends and admirers of Sherlock Holmes at the Sherlock Holmes Dinner held March 31, 1944, Murray Hill Hotel, New York City. Known as the "Dinner Edition." This is copy number 44. This was Julian Wolff's copy with his neat bookplate on the front pastedown sheet. A great association copy between the giant of the mystery world and the Commissionaire of the Baker Street Irregulars (BSI) and editor of The Baker Street Journal. A copy of a cablegram addressed to Baker Street Irregulars', Edgar Smith arrived from England with the message that the family of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle consider this book a "monstrous perpetration and highly detrimental to the good name and honesty of American literature. Adrian Conan Doyle and Executors." Trivial wear to the spine ends, else a fine, bright copy in a bright dust jacket with minor wear to the spine ends, corners and extremities. Thirty-three stories that belong to the combined category of parody-travesty-satire-burlesque about the "Great Man." Unrecorded cases, not as Doctor Watson related them, but as others greater than Watson imagined them. Dust jacket cover art and illustrations by Frederic Dorr Steele. An exceptional copy of an elusive title.
