First edition. Author's second mystery novel. Lightly foxed throughout else a very good copy in lightly rubbed dust jacket, with light wear to the extremities. An historical novel set in late Victorian England where bare-fist pugilism is outlawed, but manages to survive in secret. Insp. Cribb believes a house under the watchful eye of the police, is a center for this evil sport. Cribb believes the losing fighters have been disposed of by decapitation so that the corpses cannot be identified.
