Publication: Small, Maynard & Company Publishers, 1910, Boston

First edition. 8vo. Fine, bright and fresh copy. Illustrated by William Oberhardt. A Haycraft-Queen cornerstone, selected by Howard Haycraft. His original choices cover the period between 1845 and 1938. Queen's Quorum 46 says "... one of the most daring and imaginative books ever committed to print -- the first volume of short stories to make scientific use of psychology as a method of crime detection, including the earliest fictional appearance of the "lie-detector." Embossed red cloth, printed with titles on spine printed in white and in red on a white background on the front cover. A fine, square copy with virtually all of the white paint on the front cover and spine intact. Rare in this condition as most copies have a substantial portion of the paint chipped and rubbed away. An exceptional copy of an elusive Haycraft/Queen and Queen's Quorum title and housed in a clamshell case with titles stamped in gilt on the spine.
