An historical narrative describing the early European discovery and exploration of the Mississippi River, drawing mainly on French expeditions of the 17th century, especially those associated with Louis Jolliet and Father Jacques Marquette. It recounts how French explorers, motivated by trade, missionary activity, and imperial expansion, traveled westward from Canada in search of a great river rumored by Indigenous peoples. Guided by Native knowledge, they navigated through the Great Lakes, portaged into the Wisconsin River, and in 1673 entered the Mississippi River. Former owner's neat bookplate on the front pastedown sheet, internally clean and tight with covers lightly soiled. else a very good copy.
