The author's first book publication as a writer and one of the classic illustrated works of the American West. A collection of prose pieces gathered from Harper's Magazine depicting U.S. Cavalry life, cowboys, Native Americans, hunting, ranching, and travel in the American West and northern Mexico. Among the subjects are the Sioux outbreak in South Dakota, a rodeo at Los Ojos, life with Mexican "punchers" in the Sierra Madre, coaching in Chihuahua, policing Yellowstone, and Army life on the frontier.

This copy is one of the very few which seems to have survived in the deluxe binding [suede being notoriously fragile to wear and deterioration]. While the existence of this binding is no bibliographic secret, BAL was unable to locate a copy for examination, & Jeff Dykes in his Remington section of 50 Great Western Illustrators notes this binding as "an issue in full leather is reported." Very few other copies of this book in the rare original suede binding exist, evidently only four or five examples are known. It apparently is a special binding for either friends of the publisher, or of Remington himself. Some very slight rubbing to edges. Previous owner's small stamp in upper corner of front pastedown endpaper. A Bright, Near Fine copy of this Exceedingly Rare binding. A landmark work by one of the foremost artists and chroniclers of the American West.
