A thoroughly researched biography of Pat Garrett, presenting him as far more than simply the sheriff who killed Billy the Kid. Metz traces Garrett from his early years and days as a buffalo hunter through his emergence as a New Mexico lawman. The heart of the book covers his service as sheriff of Lincoln County, his involvement in the Lincoln County War, and his pursuit of Billy the Kid. The author Metz gives considerable attention to the Kid's capture, escape, Garrett's subsequent manhunt, and the July 1881 killing of Billy the Kid at Fort Sumner. Ramon Adams says "This is perhaps the best and most thoroughly researched book on the life of Pat Garrett."
