Bourke was a U.S. Army officer who became an ethnologist, a military historian, and a prolific writer on the American West. His military career was primarily in the post-Civil War west. Serving under the command of General George Crook, Bourke fought in major battles and campaigns against the Sioux, the Northern Cheyenne, and pursued the Apaches deep into the Sierra Madre Mountains of Mexico.
