In 1862, the Sioux Indians of Minnesota suddenly attacked and killed hundreds of innocent, and largely unarmed settlers in the Minnesota River valley. The massacre continued for several days. Many of the settlers that were not killed were captured, most of whom were women & children, and many who were subjected to brutal atrocities. This famous image was taken by Adrian Ebell on August 21, 1862, a few days after the Sioux Uprising began. A group of refugees from the Riggs Mission are fleeing from the Indians, and have stopped briefly on the open prairie to have a meal. This image was published by Joel E. Whitney, a well-established photographer in St. Paul, Minnesota. Whitney took and published many images of Indians and the development of St. Paul and Minneapolis. Whitney went to the prison encampment of the captured and imprisoned Sioux near Fort Snelling and took photographs of many participants in the Uprising and massacre. In addition, Whitney published images of other photographers such as Adrian Ebell and Benjamin Upton. This image is a particularly rare image, taken in the field by Adrian Ebell and published by Whitney; only the third that we have seen. Image is clear and sharp, and The Whitney Gallery imprint on the back is recorded as having been used during the years 1862-1866.
