This is by H. M. Brock to illustrate the story “The Stranger’s Latchkey,” by the author R. Austin Freeman, which featured the author’s famous character, Dr. Thorndyke. It was first published in the January 1909 issue of Pearson’s Magazine and then in the author’s first short story collection, John Thorndyke’s Cases, published in London by Chatto & Windus in 1909. The book was included in Queen’s Quorum, the list of the 106 great detective story collections of all time, and the Haycraft-Queen cornerstone list as one of the greatest mystery books of all time. It was executed in wash. The illustration measures 8” x 13”; matted and framed, 15 ½” x 20 ½.” Fine.
