The day after he has a pleasant but uneventful dinner with his cousin, Horace, he vanishes and although his ashes are delivered to the American consulate in Beijing and there is a memorial service for him in Washington, Horace is not convinced he's dead. Horace enlists the help of other retired operatives, the "old boys," and together they try to discover the whereabouts of Paul.
