Publication: Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc, 1937, Garden City

First edition. 8vo. This copy bears the following presentation inscription by the author on the title page in his fine hand, "Inscribed for Mel and Ethel Eaton at the request of Jim and Mildred Campbell, and gladly, with the very best wishes of their friend Kenneth Roberts. July 10, 1937." The book's publication date was June 25, 1937. Langdon Towne and his friend Hunk Marriner get drunk in a pub and are nearly arrested. They escape and encounter frontier soldier Robert Rogers and subsequently join Rogers' Rangers, an elite group of frontiersmen who fought for the British during the Seven Years' War. The group embarks on an often-disastrous mission against French troops and Indian tribes around Quebec, facing both fierce enemies and natural obstacles, including horrendous weather and starvation. The 1940 King Vidor classic film was both a critical and box office success. The film starred Spencer Tracy, Robert Young, Walter Brennan, Ruth Hussey, and Nat Pendleton. An historical novel largely set in the northeastern U.S. during the French and Indian Wars. Fine in dust jacket with a hint of wear to the spine ends.
