Two-page printed newspaper The Tri-Weekly News, Houston, Texas, Volume XXII, No. 9, July 22, 1863. Paper measures 18" x 12" with five columns per page and full of news from a number of sources about the Civil War. Some optimistic reporting about the success in Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania by General Lee and his marches into southern Pennsylvania with victories in Greencastle, Chambersburg and Harrisburg. Reports of activity include "The flour mills at Chambersburg were seized." "The rebels were in possession of Hagerstown (Maryland) and such other points as would enable them to operate against Harrisburg or Baltimore." "General Lee has had another battle. he captured Harrisburg, Penn. and 18,000 prisoners."

Other articles announce the Yankee blockade of the lower Texas coast and the complete isolation of Corpus Christi. Much is provided on the fall of Vicksburg and its probable affects upon the people. A long and detailed list of casualties for all state's companies is provided. Interesting advertisement regarding the sale of 124 likely negroes on July 22nd, 1863, with a description of each candidate, and much. much more.

This is a very rare Texas newspaper which began publication in Galveston but moved inland to Houston during the Civil War. According to Gregory (Union List of American Newspapers) no institution has this date in their holdings. A very good copy.
