First edition. 8vo. Cloth, titles stamped in gilt on the spine, lxxix [blank], 296 pp., preface, introduction, illustrated, plates, portraits, epilogue, appendices, sources, index. In 1849, Lt. James H. Simpson was commissioned by the Army Corps of Topographical Engineers to survey the country inhabited by the Navahos. At the time it was a vast area known primarily by Mexican, French, and American traders. Simpson's report provided a wealth of information about New Mexico Territory and its people at that time. Cloth corners are lightly rubbed, light offsetting to the front and rear endpapers, else very good in price-clipped dust jacket with minor wear to the extremities.
