Blue decorated cloth with gold stamping on front and rear covers and spine, light blue linen endpapers, [4], xvii [3], 424 [4] pp., frontis. [portrait], introduction, preface, acknowledgments, chronology, foreword, illustrated, maps. Forewords by Bradford Washburn and John H. Batten. Illustrated with color and black and white reproductions of original art by Belmore Browne, in addition to photographs from the archives of the Browne family. Browne was a hunter, mountain climber, and explorer who toured the interior of Alaska in the early days of the twentieth century. At that time Alaska was still largely a white blank on the map and no collection had ever been made of the great mammals of the North. Later he became a nationally-known artist while working for the American Museum of Natural History. As new, without dust jacket as issued, housed in a light blue boards slipcase.
