Publication: Privately Printed, ND (ca 1915), NP

First Edition. Cloth. 153pp. Frontispiece, plus 9 additional plates. The author is the daughter of Dr. Henry H. Spalding, an early Presbyterian missionary among the Nez Perces Indians. She was the first American white child born in the Pacific Northwest who reached maturity, being born at the Lapwai Mission (now in Idaho) in 1837. As a little girl of 10, she was at the Whitman Mission at the time of the massacre, as Cayuse Indians killed Dr. Marcus Whitman, his wife, and a dozen others. An interesting account with first-hand observations of Dr. McLaughlin and the Hudson's Bay Company; fur trader and trapper, Peter S. Ogden; and many from among the missionary groups. This scarce work includes the Diary of Mrs. H. H. Spalding's Overland March Across the Continent 1836-1838, Letters of Dr. Spalding, 1842-1845; Reminiscences of Eliza Spalding Warren; etc. A near fine, clean, bright copy with only the slightest of edgewear.
