This is a short pioneer memoir about traveling overland from Missouri to Oregon in 1846, when Pringle was a boy. It is also an early description of the Deschutes River and central Oregon.

It is essentially two related pieces: “Magic River Deschutes” — Pringle describes the Deschutes River, its scenery, unusual character, and the impression it made on him. “Experience of an Emigrant Boy in 1846” — this is the more historical portion. Pringle recalls his family's ox-team journey from Missouri, across the Plains, and eventually into Oregon. Much of the narrative concerns their experiences traveling through Oregon.
