Leicester & Continental Mills Co. is due to the unremitting efforts of two brothers, Wilson H. Brown and Everett H. Brown. Its large business interests can't be fully understood without relating their business career from the beginning. In 1884, when Mr. Brown was 22 years of age he started in business in a little mill at 46th and Girard Avenue, Philadelphia, manufacturing woolen yarn. In 1886 Everett H. Brown purchased an interest in the business continuing under the firm name of W. H. Brown. Three years later a small room in a mill on Armat street, Germantown, was rented. In 1890 the business had increased to such an extent that the entire Armat street mill was needed to handle the business. The business had increased to over 20,000 feet. At this time the firm name was changed to Wilson H. Brown & Bro. They now had their own power plant and added to this their own dye house. Shortly after this time the firm went into the manufacture of men's and boys' sweaters. This branch of their business grew rapidly. It was in 1894 that Wilson H. Brown bought the large mills of Charles Spencer & Co.; a year later The Leicester Mills Co. was incorporated. The Leicester Mills Co. continued in the manufacture of yarn and sweaters until 1897, when they became interested in the Continental Mills, which had operated on Eiderdown cloth and ladies' garments. In this same year The Leicester Mills Co. absorbed The Continental Mills Co., and the corporation name became The Leicester & Continental Mills Co., Inc.. The products of the firm since then have been Eiderdown dressing sacks and wrappers, Eiderdown piece goods, men's sweaters, bathing suits, athletic goods, bath robes and woolen yarn. Light wear to the extremities to include a 3/4" closed tear at the crease, light soiling else very good.
