Harney, was organized in 1855 to chastise the Sioux for the killing of Lt. John L. Grattan and his command of twenty-nine men in the summer of 1853."-Wagner-Camp-Becker 283. Harney chose Lt. Gouveneur K. Warren, Topographical Engineer, to accompany the force as surveyor. Warren gathered much data throughout the territory covered by the expedition. Warren produced 3 detailed maps, the most significant of which is 36"x56.5" in size, and is entitled "Reconnaissances in the Dakota Country by G. K. Warren...This map contains, in addition, all authentic Explorations within the limits comprised by it. They are those of Major Long, Nicollet, Capt. Fremont and Capt. Stansbury". An attractive ex-library copy with a small stamp on verso of title page, else the text block is clean and tight, and the three-quarter leather binding is in fine condition. The large map has been removed by a previous owner from the rear of the text volume and has been backed in linen and protected in a tube. All maps are in nice condition.
