First edition. 8vo. Cloth, titles stamped in gold gilt on the spine, xii, (13) - 432 pp., frontispiece (Lower Covero), preface, illustrated. This book is mainly written from a diary the author kept during a residence of two and a half years in New Mexico, and the matters contained in it are either drawn from careful personal observation, or other reliable sources. The classic description of New Mexico as it was when that centuries-old hispanic settlement passed into U. S. hands. His sketch of the history of New Mexico is the first to have been done from the local archives. He gives a very good picture of the beginnings of the amiable relationship among cultures that characterizes New Mexico. Davis was in New Mexico as the United States District Attorney, and also served as acting governor at one point. This account is quite literate and well written, and includes a narrative of his trip across the plains on the Santa Fe Trail. Light scattered foxing, not affecting text or illustrations; previous owner's small sticker to bottom corner of front paste down sheet along with glue residue to inside front board and with tiny hole to front free page leaf. Light bumping to corner edges with minor loss to head of spine along with loss of 1/8" x 11/4" at top of rear board.
