Publication: Ben C Jones & Co, Printers, 1900, Austin
First Edition. Thick 8vo. Red cloth as this copy was rebound by the publisher after the fire that destroyed most of the copies viii, 844 pp., Preface, frontispiece, Illustrated, plates, portraits. Basic Texas Books 193 says "Not an expansion of Rangers And Pioneers, this is an entirely different work containing hundreds of accounts of incidents in pioneer Texas...The work contains 132 accounts of early pioneers, mostly as told by them directly to Sowell...Most of the work, however, relates to Indian fights and Texas Rangers. This material is fresh and for the most part not repeated in Brown, Wilbarger, or other works...The book was printed by the Austin firm of Ben C. Jones, and most copies of the original edition were destroyed in that firm's disastrous fire a few years after publication." Howes S 797 says "Nearly all copies were either destroyed or damaged by fire." An important account of the experiences of the early settlers in Texas.
This copy has light evidence of water damage to the top margin of the first 300 pages of the book caused at the time of the fire that destroyed many copies, replacement title page as described by BTB 193. Some very light wear to spine ends and corners, else a very good copy of a very rare book.
