Established in 1902 as the fifth national park in the United States, Crater Lake is renowned for its deep blue waters, formed within the collapsed caldera of Mount Mazama. Ickes saw the National Park Service as a tool for both ecological stewardship and democratic access. Through the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), Ickes directed labor and resources to Crater Lake, improving roads, building trails and visitor facilities, and supporting scientific research.
