Cockfighter by Charles Willeford

by Charles Willeford

Publication: Avon, 1974, New York

First edition thus. The first paperback version of Willeford's revised edition, published in hardcover by Crown in 1972, some ten years after the original Chicago Paperback edition. This edition is the scarce Avon movie edition with Warren Oates depicted on the front cover holding a fighting rooster. A 4" x 3" slip of paper signed by Charles Willeford is laid-in. Very good in pictorial wrappers with a hairline reader's crease parallel to the spine. This is the story of Frank Mansfield, a ruthless, compulsive man who at one time was the top cock-handler around. When his cock fell short of expectations, Frank lost everything ... his money and his pride. Now his goal is to win the Cockfighter of the Year award, and he's vowed not to speak another word until he regains his lost fortune and lost reputation.
