Publication: Jonathan Cape, 1979, London
First edition. Fine in dust jacket. Foreword by General W. K. Nehring, formerly Guderian's Chief of Staff. Numerous illustrations, plates, figures, tables, and maps. This is the second published volume of Deighton's planned 12-volume series describing the Second World War in terms of technical accomplishment. According to Milward-Oliver's annotated bibliography of Len Deighton, he says, "..... deals with the earlier "blitzkreig" war on the ground, but for which the Battle of Britain would never have been fought. Deighton opens with an account of Hitler's rise to power, then traces the idea, the planning, and the realization of the German High Command's strategy of the 'lightning war'." The dust jacket has a reproduction of the "Totenkopf" [Death's Head] emblem worn by all members of the German panzer units in 1940. Deighton's work as a historian of World War II has been widely recognized and applauded. Becoming difficult to find in collector's condition.
