First Editions. Cloth. 1890 clxxxiii-553pp. 1891 Volume 1 707pp. Volume 2 viii.-416pp. 1892 ix-1294pp. + Large, Color, Folding Map. We offer this 3-year run of Annual Reports as a group primarily based on common condition of original volumes, but more important from our perspective, is the insight that they provide into this historic period in the relations of the U.S. Army and government with the Sioux Indian tribe. They address the emergence of an Indian "Messiah" and the powerful influence that his teaches had on many tribes, but especially the Sioux. The resultant "Ghost Dance" craze created a dramatic increase in the tensions between various groups of the Sioux tribe and the U.S. Army, and ultimately resulting in the infamous tragedy of Wounded Knee. Additionally, and during the same month as Wounded Knee, Sitting Bull was killed by Indian Police who were attempting to arrest him under orders from Agent, James McLaughlin. This dramatic event is recorded herein. These annual reports address current conditions at all of the agencies and reservations, as provided by each agent, as well as an overview of conditions presented by the Commissioner, T. J. Morgan. There is some minor edgewear to each of these volumes. All are lightly rubbed with light sunning to the spines. All are tight and in original brown cloth. The 1892 map is fine and bright.
