Publication: The American Mercury, 1924, New York

First edition. Story appears in The American Mercury magazine, Volume I, Number 4, April, 1924. The third of the series of "American Portraits" that Cain, then a professor of journalism at St. John's College in Annapolis, Maryland, wrote for this new and prestigious monthly review edited by H.L. Mencken and George Jean Nathan and published by an ambitious young New Yorker named Alfred Knopf. This story appeared six years before Cain's first book, Our Government, which was an outgrowth of some of his Mercury essays, and fully ten years before his remarkable first novel, The Postman Always Rings Twice, which, with the passage of time, seems more and more certain to endure as one of the truly important and infuential novels of the twentieth century. Spine and cover edges of this green wrapper slightly discolored, else very good in printed wrappers.
