Fifteen books of which thirteen were written and illustrated by the author, and two were written by Mark Helprin and illustrated by Van Allsburg. Since the publication of his first book for children, The Garden of Abdul Gasazi, in 1979, for which he received a Caldecott Honor, to his best-known book, The Polar Express, a Christmas classic and a Caldecott Medal Book, he has contributed in an unprecedented manner to the advancement of children's literature.
