Since the publication of his first book for children, The Garden of Abdul Gasazi, in 1979, for which he received a Caldecott Honor, to his best-known book, The Polar Express, a Christmas classic and a Caldecott Medal Book, he has contributed in an unprecedented manner to the advancement of children's literature.
