Chief Wakara (c. 1808-1855; also known as Walkara or Walker) was a leader of the Timpanogo and Sanpete Band who lived in Utah when the Mormon pioneers arrived in 1847. He was known as a skilled diplomat, warrior, and horse thief, which earned him the moniker “Napoleon of the Desert.” Despite an initial peace, land disputes between the Mormons and the Native Americans led to a conflict remembered as Wakara’s War. This biography attempts to paint a portrait of Wakara and examine the events that led to the conflict between his people and the Mormons.
