First Edition. Limited to 300 copies. Pictorial Cloth. 80pp. Illustrated. Introduction. Biographical Notes. An informative account of the events of this complex and protracted Indian war. "The conflict was, of course, the Modoc War of 1872-1873, in which a band of some 50 Modoc Indians under Captain Jack (Kientpoos) caused the U.S.Army copious embarrassment and not a few casualties in what was one of the costliest Indian campaigns of American history and the major Indian war on the soil of California. Of the five engagements of the Modoc War, not one could be considered to be a clear-cut victory for the U.S.Army, which outnumbered the Modoc about twenty-five to one at the finish...The toll of whites in the war was one hundred and sixty-eight dead or wounded while only five Modoc were killed in action".-Introduction. Previous owner's bookplate on front paste-down. Brief signed inscription by R. H. Dillon on front free-endpaper, else a fine copy.
