First edition. Two-tone full leather, n. p. (approximately 300 pp.), double column, illustrated, many in color. 8vo. This is a most unusual book as someone has compiled from many magazine publications, articles written by and illustrations by Howard Pyle. Howard Pyle, a native of Wilmington, Delaware, was one of America’s most popular illustrators and storytellers at the end of the 19th century during a period of explosive growth in the publishing industry. His illustrations appeared in magazines like Harper’s Monthly, St. Nicholas, and Scribner’s Magazine, gaining him both national and international exposure. The broad appeal of his imagery made him a celebrity in his lifetime. Pyle was also a prolific writer who authored and illustrated over 24 books, mostly for children, including the four part series, The Story of King Arthur and His Knights. In this collection, articles have been taken from THE CENTURY MAGAZINE, HARPER'S NEW MONTHLY MAGAZINE, and SCRIBNER'S MAGAZINE. The date of each entry range from May 1876 through November 1907, with assorted dates in between. An interesting and varied collection of the writings and illustrations of Howard Pyle. Lightly rubbed at the spine ends and covers lightly soiled else a very good, tight, clean copy of a unique item. Housed in a cloth slipcase.
