Publication: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1967, New York

First U. S. edition. Author's third mystery novel. Inked gift inscription on the front free fly leaf: "To Otto & Carolyn, P. D. James." The inscription is to Otto Penzler of The Mysterious Bookshop and his wife Carolyn. Fine in dust jacket with minor wear to the head of spine and top front corner. Famous mystery writer, Maurice Seton, is found dead at the bottom of a small boat -- both hands chopped off at the wrists. Although the post mortem shows that Seton died from natural causes, Dalgliesh is of a different opinion.
