The West Of William H. Ashley, The International Struggle For The Fur Trade Of The Missouri, The Rocky Mountains, And The Columbia, With Explorations Beyond The Continental Divide, Recorded In The Diaries And Letters Of William H. Ashley And His Contemporaries 1822-1838

by Dale (Editor). Morgan

First edition. Limited to 250 copies, hand numbered and signed by Dale Morgan. Half calf and tan buckram, 341 pp., illustrations, 3 maps (large folding map). Beautiful color plates by Charles Bodmer. The result of two decades of research, Morgan considered this book his most important single historical work. A brilliantly edited compilation of primary source material, this important work reveals much about Ashley's Missouri Fur Company and his role in the fur trade after selling out to Jedediah Smith, David E. Jackson, and William Sublette. Material includes letters, newspaper transcripts, and Ashley's recently identified exploration diary from 1825. Very minor 3" crease to front free endpaper, else an exceptionally fine bright copy in original slipcase. Highly recommended.
