In a pocket affixed to the rear pastedown sheet is a colorful two-sided brochure of the Mormon Pioneer Trail. One side provides the historic details and the other side is a map depicting the exodus from Nauvoo, Illinois to Salt Lake City and Utah. Editor Will Bagley's copy with numerous annotations and corrections in his hand. Additionally he has placed paper markers at points where corrections have been made and also placed several letters from various correspondents at referenced places in the book. Volume 1 in the ambitious and well-received 'Kingdom in the West' series. The official journal of the Brigham Young pioneer company is made available for the first time in this book. The arrival of Latter-day Saints in the Valley of the Great Salt Lake is one of the major events in the history of the LDS church and the West. Thomas Bullock, the author of this account, was the official journal keeper of that party of pioneers. This book was the winner of the 1997 Mormon Historical Association's Steven F. Christensen Award for Best Documentary. Will Bagley (1950- 2021) wrote and edited more than twenty books on overland emigration, frontier violence, railroads, mining, and the Mormons. He lectured widely and appeared in more than a dozen films, including the American Experience episode of 'The Mormons' on PBS. Between 2000 and 2004, The Salt Lake Tribune published more than 200 of his columns and articles. ‘Blood of the Prophets: Brigham Young and the Massacre at Mountain Meadows’ won Best Books award from the Western History Association, the Denver Public Library, Westerners International, and the Western Writers of America Spur Award. He was editor of the Arthur H. Clark Company’s Documentary history series, ‘Kingdom in the West: The Mormons and the American Frontier.' Mr. Bagley also worked as a consultant for the National Park Service, the Bureau of Land Management, National Geographic magazine, and the Southern Nevada Conservancy. The annotations and corrections, as well as the letters laid-in, make this unique copy quite desirable.This is a one-of-a-kind book and Bagley's personal copy in fine condition in dust jacket.
