Publication: Adams & Bishop, Publishers, 1881, New York
Embossed maroon cloth over paper, [2], 355 [9] pp., preface, double column, illustrated, tourist guide, advertisements, index. Laid-in to the front is a 23" x 36 5/8" colorful map. Information about palace car life on the Pacific Railroad followed by beautiful illustrations and information about cities, towns and areas in the various states and all each has to offer. This wonderfully illustrated guide is not listed in Eberstadt, Howes, or Graff. Decker lists the earlier 1876 edition, which did not include Adams & Bishop. The very colorful folding map is laid inside the front cover. The map's title is "Williams' New Trans-Continental Map of the Pacific R. R. and Routes of Overland Travel to [...] California and the Pacific Coast." The map is printed on blue paper and is printed in shades of green, blue, pink, and yellow. The route of the Union Pacific Railroad is shown in bold with its stops and other smaller connecting lines. There is minor splitting at the cross folds, and the left edge is lightly worn. Overall it is a very handsome map. Gilt title on the front cover is faded, light wear to the covers, interior is clean and tight, else a very good copy.
