Preface by John T. McIntyre. Volume II: Cloth, [4], 442 pp., frontispiece, double column, illustrated, portraits, plates, bibliography, index. Volume I presents a brief review of the pre-Beadle dime novels, a look at some of their authors, artists and readers, a history of the Beadle family and the firm from its earliest days in Cooperstown and Buffalo in the 1850s to its last years from 1890 to 1897. It is devoted to bibliographic descriptions with scores of full-page, full-color illustrations of their fascinating covers. Volume II was published simultaneously with Volume I in 1950 is devoted mainly to biographical accounts, many illustrated with black and white photographs, of Beadle & Adams' authors. An appendix includes lists of the principal Beadle series, the numbers of titles published in each series, author's pseudonyms. It concludes with indexes to both volumes, including Titles and Subtitles; Characters; Localities, etc. Volume III (not included in this offering) published in 1962 contains corrections, additions, Index of the Songs in Beadle's Song Books, and an addenda to the general index in Volume II. Also Volume III was issued in cloth and the only volume to have a dust jacket. Very good copies.
