Offers a detailed account of the pivotal 1876 battle between the U.S. Army and the Northern Cheyenne, led by Chiefs Dull Knife and Little Wolf. This confrontation marked a significant turning point in the Cheyenne's resistance during the Great Sioux War. In November 1876, Colonel Ranald S. Mackenzie led a surprise attack on a large Cheyenne village situated along the Red Fork of the Powder River in Wyoming. The Cheyenne were caught off guard as they slept. Mackenzie's forces, numbering over 1,000 soldiers and scouts, overwhelmed the village, forcing its inhabitants into the harsh winter conditions without adequate shelter or supplies. The Cheyenne suffered significant casualties, with around 40 killed and many more wounded. The following night, temperatures plummeted to 30 below zero, leading to the deaths of 11 infants from exposure. The survivors, demoralized and without resources, were compelled to surrender, effectively ending the Cheyenne's resistance on the plains. As new, unread copy without dust jacket, as issued.
