First U. S. edition. Author's first book. Fine in dust jacket. 20th Century Crime and Mystery Writers says: "The cooler" was the name given half-jocosely by British agents and spy-masters in WWII, among whom Markstein himself surely figured, to an establishment in Scotland set up to deal with agents who had returned from occupied Europe or elsewhere either psychologically unfit or imbued, for one reason or another, with a recalcitrant opposition to the received wisdom of their superiors and who knew too much to be allowed honorable retirement. In the cooler they were, quite simply, held prisoner. Of course, the existence of such a place could not be admitted." The author was the screenwriter for the movie THE ODESSA FILE, and the creator of the television series THE PRISONER, that aired in 1967 - 1968 for 17 episodes and starred Patrick McGoohan as secret agent 6. Agent 6, after resigning as a secret agent is abducted and taken to what looks like an idyllic village, but is really a bizarre prison. His warders demand information. He gives them nothing, but only tries to escape. Highly recommended.
