Shirk relates much on the development of ranching in the Oregon/Idaho region, hostile Indian depredations, and his range warfare with cattle giant, Pete French. Shirk's manuscript, now in University of Oregon Library, gives the only known account of the cattle drives from Texas to the Pacific Northwest. A fine, uncut copy.
